Secretary’s Sketch 2006-2009
Respected seniors & my dear colleagues,
The last three years have been momentous and a fulfilling experience in quest for perfection. I am indeed honoured to continue for a second term as Secretary which is unprecedented to date. I thank you all for this confidence reposed in me and I shall do my best to keep up the fine traditions of our esteemed society. There are some perceptible gains as also some disappointments. The important thing that needs to be done is to consolidate the gains for the betterment of our society.
Registration / PAN Card / Flag / New Constitution
Our society was officially registered with the registrar of cooperative societies wide registration No: 1147 / 2007. We obtained a PAN Card for the society. We have now formalized our activities by hoisting our society flag before the scientific activity. We rewrote the Memorandum and Byelaws of our society and after approval in the GBM submitted t to the Registrar.
Past President’s Forum
We constituted a Past President’s forum which is a guiding body which operates as per the Byelaws of the Society. We recognized the contributions of all past presidents by honoring them with a Past President’s medal.
Grievance Cell
We constituted a Grievance Cell for the benefit of all members. This cell is currently active and all members are requested to avail this facility in case of any need. You can contact the chairman Dr Vengal Rao or its members Dr Madhava Sai or Dr Sadasiva Rao under intimation to me. The details are uploaded in our website.
Membership
The membership of the society as ratified at 33rd APOC at Vizag stands at 1003. I would again like to request you all to encourage your colleagues & postgraduate students who are not members to enroll & enjoy the benefits on offer from the society.
65th AIOC SUNAYANA
SUNAYANA 2007 is a watershed in the history of APOS. Its stupendous success set a benchmark in the organization of AIOC’s. The managing committee of AIOS appreciated the contribution of Rs 44 lacs. from the LOC of SUNAYANA 2007 towards share of the AIOS out of the proceeds of the 65th AIOC at Hyderabad. This is an all time high record which is substantially higher than the earlier record. The LOC led by Dr NS Reddy and Dr Pradeep Swarup and chiefly assisted by Dr Manoj Mathur and Dr Santosh Honavar set a high standard and a challenge to the other LOC’s in conference organization. The other members of the core committee were Dr Vengala Rao and Dr Gangadhar Reddy.
A substantial saving was made from this conference and with this a separate APOS Sunayana Fund created. This fund is at present untouched in the Bank in a general account under AIOS PAN No. As per rules, after apportionment of the amount due to AIOS and after submitting the audited accounts to the AIOS, we have obtained clearance to officially transfer the remaining funds under APOS. We now have the option to invest these funds in fixed deposits to generate higher returns.
The four permanent trustees have taken over the management of these funds. Dr NS Reddy is appointed as the Chairman trustee & Dr Pradeep Swarup is the Secretary / Treasurer trustee. Dr Manoj Mathur & Dr Santosh Honavar are the other permanent member trustees. Past Presidents Dr Gangadhar Reddy & Dr K Vengal Rao were co-opted as members for the current term.
For this year we are presenting all the Govt. Medical Colleges books worth over Rs. 50,000/- each. We have decided to introduce a Best Teacher’s award after approval of the GBM worth Rs. 25,000/- each year. Several Cash awards are also instituted for the best scientific presentations.
31st / 32nd & 33rd APOC’s at Tirupati, Vijayawada and Vizag
The last 3 Conferences at Tirupati, Vijayawada and Vizag were a scientific success. The organizers did their best to provide a sumptuous fare to overall satisfaction of the members. The Tirupati conference was clubbed with 2nd OASIS and was a scintillating success. The Vijayawada conference was a scientific success and we bounced back economically even while maintaining the high scientific standards at Vizag.

District Chapters of APOS:
We have been successful in constituting the district chapters of APOS. Dr Ranga Reddy, Dr NS Reddy, Dr Anjaneyulu, Dr Vengala Rao, Dr MA Padmanabham and Dr Madhava Sai coordinated these efforts and rightfully deserve all credit. These senior members who are also our past presidents, through the newly constituted Past President’s forum facilitated the nominations from the district chapters to the MC of APOS.
Sub-committee Sonnets:
All the subcommittees performed as a team with utmost dedication and commitment for the welfare of the society. The Scientific committee has been formulating a stimulating programme for the conferences. The second OASIS meeting at Tirupathi and the 33rd APOC at Vizag were a scintillating success. I would like to congratulate Dr Madhukar Reddy for his excellent performance.
The ARC organized workshops in different medical colleges for the PGs & practitioners. Its chairman Dr Subrahmanyam has introduced useful changes in the format. He has devised the criteria for the Best Teacher’s award. Research scholarship was awarded to a Scholar and he has also coordinated with the heads of medical colleges regarding the list of books to be given to them. I would like to congratulate him for his excellent performance.
The Editor has published 5 issues of News n Views. It has also now been decided that the proceedings of the conference shall also be a part of the proposed annual Andhra Pradesh Journal of Ophthalmology to be printed in the month of December each year. I would like to congratulate Dr C Sharat Babu for his dynamic services.
Family Benefit Insurance
The family benefit insurance has a current membership of around 450. This is very ably managed by the MC of FBI led by DR Ranga Reddy and Dr SV Katta. I would like to thank them for their honorary services.
